Questions & answers
What people ask us
Short answers from the workshop. If yours is not here, ask: we reply within one working day.
General
Do you work outside Delhi?
Yes. The workshop is in Delhi and most of our work is installed across Delhi NCR and India. Tell us where the project is and we will say how delivery and installation would be handled.
What should I send to get a quotation?
Whatever exists: a drawing, a sketch, a reference picture, or a description with sizes and quantities. We will come back with questions, and a price once the scope is clear enough to be honest about.
Can I see a sample before I commit?
Yes, and we prefer it. A finish is decided on a physical sample on the metal you are considering, never from a screen.
Do you handle installation?
Yes. The people who fabricate a piece are involved in installing it, so the drawing and the site agree.
Architectural Metalwork
The pageWhat drawings do you need to start a feature structure?
Whatever exists: an architect’s concept, a sketch, a reference photograph. The first thing produced from it is a structural drawing — what carries the weight and how it fixes to the building — and the surface is drawn onto that. If the concept has no structure yet, that is the first conversation, not a problem.
Can a feature element stand on its own, or must it fix to the building?
Either, and the choice changes the piece. A freestanding element needs its own base and enough weight or footprint to be stable, which shapes it. One fixed back to the structure can be lighter and more open, but the fixing has to be agreed with whoever owns that wall or slab. Deciding this first saves redrawing the whole thing.
Luxury Wall Cladding
The pageWhy do some large metal panels look wavy?
Because sheet metal is never perfectly flat, and a big unbroken face shows every ripple once light runs along it. The cure is in the making: a sub-frame that is true, panels sized so they stay flat, and a folded return on every edge for stiffness. A wavy wall is almost always a panel that was too large for its thickness or fixed to a frame that was not straight.
Can wall cladding be taken down and refitted?
If it was designed to be. Panels hung on concealed clips or a rail can be lifted off individually — to reach services behind, or to replace one that has been damaged — and go back in the same place. Panels that were glued or welded into one surface cannot. Say at the outset whether access will ever be needed.
Metal Ceilings
The pageCan services above a metal ceiling still be reached?
Yes, if the ceiling is designed around it. Baffle and open-cell systems give access by their nature; solid and coffered ceilings need panels that lift out and drop back true without marking. Where the access is needed — over a valve, a damper, a junction box — is settled with the services drawing before the ceiling is set out.
How is a metal ceiling kept level across a long room?
On its suspension, not on the panels. A grid or a set of hangers is levelled first, checked with a laser, and the ceiling elements are hung from it. Trying to level a ceiling by adjusting the visible panels never works — the eye reads the line of the edges, and that line comes from what they hang on.
Screens & Partitions
The pageHow open should a decorative screen be?
It depends on what it is for. A screen that separates two dining areas should let light and glimpses through but not a clear view; one that hides a plant room should not. The pattern’s open area, its depth and how it is lit decide this, so the honest test is a full-size section of the real pattern held where the screen will stand and looked at from where people will be.
Can a laser-cut pattern be changed once it is cut?
No — a cut sheet is a cut sheet. Everything before that point is cheap to change and everything after it is a new panel. That is why the pattern is proofed at full size, on the real metal, before the production run starts.
Doors & Entrances
The pageWhat is the difference between a pivot door and a hinged one?
A hinged door hangs from its frame at one edge; a pivot door turns on a pin at top and bottom, set in from the edge. Pivots carry more weight and let a door be wider and heavier than hinges would allow, which is why statement entrance doors usually pivot. The trade is in the floor: a pivot needs a floor detail, and that has to be planned before the floor is laid.
Can the handles and hardware be made to match the door?
Yes, and they should be drawn with it. A handle that is the wrong scale, or fixed where a hand does not naturally fall, undoes a door that is otherwise right. Custom pulls, pushes, escutcheons and thresholds are made in the same metal and finish so the door reads as one piece.
Bespoke Furniture
The pageWill a metal table base mark a stone or timber floor?
Not if its feet are designed for that floor. A bare metal edge on stone will scratch it and on timber will dent it, so bases are finished with a foot — a glide, a pad, an adjustable leveller — chosen for the floor and for whether the piece will be moved. Levelling matters too: a four-legged frame on a floor that is not flat will rock until it is.
Can metal furniture be made for outdoor use?
Yes, with the metal and finish chosen for it. Brass, bronze and copper weather into themselves and suit a garden; stainless steel holds its look; mild steel needs a finish that protects every edge and is checked yearly. Fixings, feet and anywhere water can sit are the details that decide whether an outdoor piece lasts.
Sculptures & Art
The pageCan a sculpture be made from a small model?
That is the usual route. A maquette in clay, card or a 3D model is scaled up, and the work is in the translation: a form that holds itself at hand size has to carry its own weight at full size, survive installation, and stand on a base that does not show. The artist’s intent is protected by agreeing the finish on a sample rather than in words.
Will a patina on a sculpture keep changing?
Yes. A patina is colour grown in the metal, and it goes on developing — faster outdoors, where rain runs and hands touch. That is usually the point. If a fixed colour is wanted, the sculpture is either lacquered, which stops the change, or made in a metal and finish that does not move.
Railings & Staircases
The pageCan a handrail be made without visible joints?
Around a turn, that is the hardest thing on a staircase and the thing that most decides how it is judged. A continuous rail is formed in sections that are joined, dressed and refinished so the joint disappears under the hand as well as to the eye. Where the geometry is helical it is set out from the building as built, not from the drawing, because the two are never quite the same.
Glass balustrade or metal — how do you choose?
By what the stair is for. Glass disappears and lets a stair read as a sculpture; it also shows fingerprints, needs its own fixings and cannot carry a handrail on its own. A metal balustrade — cast panels, bars, a formed screen — is the stair’s character and carries the rail naturally. Many stairs use both: metal where hands go, glass where eyes go.
Bathroom Metalwork
The pageWill brass tarnish in a bathroom?
Bare brass will tone down anywhere, and faster where it is wet. That is either the reason to choose it or the reason to lacquer it — a lacquered brass stays bright and is simply wiped; a bare one develops a soft, darker surface that many people prefer. Choose knowingly, and judge the sample wet as well as dry.
Can a shower cubicle be made frameless in metal?
A cubicle can be as minimal as a single formed channel at the floor and a slim post, with the glass doing the rest — the frame is reduced rather than removed. The metal that remains is doing real work: holding the glass true, shedding water, and meeting the tray and the wall with a line rather than a bead of sealant.
Facades
The pageWhich metals suit an exterior facade?
The ones chosen for the exposure. Copper, brass and bronze weather into a stable surface and are used where that ageing is wanted; stainless steel holds its line for decades if its grade suits the local air; aluminium is light and takes a coating well; zinc is self-protecting and quiet. Mild steel outdoors is a finish decision — every edge and fixing has to be protected.
How does a metal facade cope with heat?
Metal expands in the afternoon sun and shrinks at night, every day, and a facade that cannot move will buckle. So panels are sized so that movement stays small, fixed at one point and allowed to slide at the others, and joints are designed to open and close by a planned amount. This is settled in the drawing, invisibly, and it is why a facade that looks simple is not.
Signage & Branding
The pageWhat decides the depth of built-up metal letters?
The reading distance and the light. Letters read from across a street need more depth and stroke than letters at a reception desk, and letters lit from behind are set off the wall by a distance that controls how soft the halo is — too close and it is a hard outline, too far and the letters float. The brand artwork is the start; the drawing shows what has to change to be made in metal.
How is halo-lit signage made?
The letter is built up as a closed metal form, the light sits inside it facing the wall, and the glow around the letter is the light bouncing back off the surface behind. The gap to the wall, the colour of the wall and the evenness of the light all show in the result, so a halo sign is proofed on the wall it will hang on, at night.
Custom Metal Details
The pageWhat is an inlay strip actually for?
To finish the line where two materials meet — stone and timber, timber and carpet, one stone and another — with something that is straight, level and intended, instead of a joint. It also takes the movement and the small mismatch in height between the two, which is why it is drawn as a section for that exact junction rather than picked from a catalogue.
Can a profile be matched to one that already exists?
Usually. A sample of the existing profile — or a good section drawing — is measured and the new one made to it, in the same metal and finish. Where the original was a standard section that no longer exists, it is remade from the measurement. The finish is the part most likely to differ, and a sample beside the original settles that.
Gates & Boundary Metalwork
The pageSliding gate or swing gate?
The site decides. A swing gate needs room to open into and a fairly level approach; a sliding gate needs a straight run of wall beside the opening to slide along, and a track or a cantilever to run on. Sliding suits tight forecourts and sloping drives; swing suits a wide, level entrance where the leaves opening is part of the arrival.
Can an existing gate be automated?
Often, if the gate and its posts are sound and the hinge geometry allows it. The drive has to be hidden, powered and reachable for service, and the gate has to be balanced enough for the motor to move it for years without strain. A gate that was never designed to be driven may need its hinges or posts rebuilt first.
Lift Lobbies & Interiors
The pageWhen should lift lobby cladding be measured?
After the lift is installed. The surround has to close onto the lift manufacturer’s own frame with no visible gap and no edge to catch, and the only reliable dimension is the one taken from the frame that is actually there. Measured from a drawing, it is made to fit on site — which is where the shims and the sealant come from.
Can a damaged lobby panel be replaced on its own?
If the cladding was designed in panels that hang individually, yes: the damaged one comes off and a new one goes on, and the lobby keeps looking new for the life of the building. If it was made as one welded surface, the first dent is permanent. In a hotel lobby, something will hit the wall eventually, so this is decided at the outset.
Fireplaces & Hearths
The pageWhich metal goes nearest the fire?
For the parts the fire touches — the basket, the back panel, the grate — blackened steel, made heavy and finished as the metal itself rather than something applied to it. Brass and bronze are used for the surround, the fender and the hearth tray, which sit beside the heat rather than in it and can carry the finishes the rest of the room has.
Can a coated or patinated surround extend into the opening?
It should stop at the line where the heat begins. A coating inside the opening blisters in its first winter; a patina moves. Ornament — cast relief, hand-beating, a fluted profile — belongs on the cool side of that line, and the working parts inside it are plain, heavy and honest.
Mirrors & Frames
The pageCan a metal mirror frame be backlit?
Yes, and it is more than a strip of light. The light has to be even along the whole edge, the driver has to be somewhere it can be reached, and the heat has to go somewhere — behind a mirror in a bathroom, where it is also damp. A backlit frame is a small electrical enclosure that happens to be beautiful, and it is designed as one.
Why is the corner of a mirror frame the hardest part?
Because the glass shows it twice. A mitre that opens by a fraction, a grain that runs the wrong way on one leg, a weld dressed slightly proud — each appears in the metal and again in the reflection beside it, from every angle in the room. The corner is made first and the sample is judged there. Curved frames avoid the corner and replace it with a join that has to vanish entirely.
Stainless Steel
The pageDoes stainless steel really not rust?
It resists rust rather than being immune to it, and how well depends on the grade and the air. Inland and indoors, a standard architectural grade stays clean for decades. Near the coast, or where the air carries chlorides, a higher grade is specified or tea-staining appears at the edges. Choosing the grade for the site is the whole decision.
Which finishes suit stainless steel best?
Hairline and brushed are its natural finishes, forgiving in busy spaces and easy to keep. Mirror is possible and unforgiving. Vibration hides handling better than either. Colour — brass, bronze, gun metal, black — is put onto stainless steel by PVD, which is how a warm tone is achieved on a metal that will not weather.
Brass
The pageWhat is the difference between brass and bronze?
Both are copper alloys. Brass is copper with zinc — yellower, brighter, easier to work and to polish. Bronze is copper with tin — redder, deeper, harder, and it weathers into a darker, more even patina. Brass is the choice for warmth and shine; bronze for gravity and age. Under a lacquer the two are close; left bare they diverge within a year.
Will brass stay bright?
Only under a lacquer or with regular polishing. Bare brass tones down — a soft, darker surface that deepens where it is handled — and that is what most people who choose bare brass are choosing. Decide at the outset which brass you want, because the two are looked after differently.
Copper
The pageHow quickly does copper change colour?
Bare copper starts to dull within weeks, browns over months, and takes years outdoors to reach the green that people picture — faster where rain runs, slower under cover. A patina can be started in the workshop so the piece arrives already on its way, or the copper can be lacquered to hold it near its bright, pink-orange state.
Is copper too soft for architectural work?
For a surface, no — it forms, beats and embosses beautifully, which is why it is chosen for hand-worked panels. For structure, yes: copper is not used to carry loads. A copper facade or feature is copper on the face and something stiffer behind it.
Bronze
The pageWhy choose bronze over brass?
For depth and permanence. Bronze is redder and darker, harder to scratch, and weathers into an even, dignified patina rather than brass’s brighter tone. It is the metal of things meant to look old well — a lift surround in a hotel corridor, a sculpture, a door. It costs more and is slower to work, and both are usually worth it where the piece will be seen for decades.
Can bronze be kept from darkening?
Lacquer holds it near its as-made colour; wax slows the change without stopping it; leaving it bare lets it go. Indoors, bare bronze darkens slowly and mostly where it is touched. Outdoors it moves faster and unevenly, which is the character of the metal rather than a fault of it.
Aluminium
The pageWhen is aluminium the right choice?
When weight matters: a large ceiling, a facade screen, a piece that has to be lifted into place or hung from something that cannot carry steel. It takes a coating or an anodised finish well and holds its colour outdoors. It does not weather the way copper alloys do, so a warm, ageing metal look is not what it is for.
Anodised or coated aluminium?
Anodising grows the finish in the metal itself, so it cannot chip or peel, and it gives clear, bronze, black and a narrow range of tones. Coating sits on the surface and gives any colour, including the warm-metal tones, at the cost of being a layer that can be scratched through. Outdoors and where hands touch, anodising lasts; where a specific colour is the brief, coating delivers it.
Mild Steel
The pageWill mild steel rust?
Yes, given the chance, which is why every piece is finished — coated, blackened, waxed or painted — and why the edges, corners and fixing holes get the most attention. Indoors, a good finish lasts indefinitely. Outdoors, mild steel is a maintenance decision: checked yearly at the edges, and refinished before the rust rather than after it.
What is blackened steel?
Mild steel with a dark, chemically converted surface — the finish of a fire basket, a stair stringer, a boutique’s shopfitting. It is the colour heat would make it, which is why it belongs near fire, and it is finished with wax or a clear coat to hold it. It marks, wears and develops, and that is its character.
Zinc
The pageWhy zinc?
For a quiet, matt, blue-grey surface that looks after itself. Zinc weathers into a self-protecting patina, does not need a coating, and reads as calm beside stone and timber where brass would read as warm. It is the choice for facades, roofs and exterior cladding where the brief wants the metal to be present without shining.
How does zinc age?
From a bright, slightly blue metal to a soft matt grey, evenly, over a few years outdoors — slower indoors, where it may never get there. It can be pre-weathered in the workshop so a facade arrives already grey. Unlike copper it does not go green, and unlike steel it does not need protecting.
Metal furniture
The pageCoffee and centre tables
Can the top be glass or stone instead of metal?
Yes. Many of our coffee tables are a sculpted metal base under a glass or stone top, and the base is drawn around the top: where it is supported, how it is located so it cannot slide, and how its edge meets the metal. Tell us the top you have in mind, or send its sample, and the base is designed to suit its weight and thickness.
Will a polished brass top show marks from cups and hands?
It will show them, and they wipe off. Mirror-polished brass is lacquered so it stays bright, and the lacquer takes everyday cups and fingerprints; a hot pan or a dragged ornament will mark it. If the table will be used hard, a brushed or textured finish hides marks far better, and a cast or relief top hides them almost entirely.
Can a design from a picture be made to a different size?
Usually, but not by simply scaling it. A table that looks right at one size can look heavy or spindly at another, so the proportions, the metal thickness and the support are redrawn for the new size. We send that drawing for approval before anything is made.
Console tables and sideboards
Can a console be fixed to the wall instead of standing on legs?
Yes, if the wall can carry it. A floating console is held on a concealed bracket or frame fixed into the structure, so we need to know what the wall is made of and what will sit on the console. On a plasterboard wall it needs a frame behind the board, planned before the wall is finished.
Can a sideboard have drawers and doors in metal?
Yes. The carcass is usually made in timber or board for its stability, and the fronts, top, plinth and handles are made in metal; fully metal cabinets are possible but heavier and noisier in use. Fluted, finned and hand-beaten fronts are made as panels and fixed so they can be removed for service.
Which finish suits a hall console that is touched every day?
A brushed, satin or hand-beaten finish, which hide fingerprints and fine scratches. Mirror polish looks spectacular and shows every touch. PVD-coloured stainless steel is the hardest-wearing of the coloured finishes, which is why it is often chosen for hotel consoles.
Dining tables
How many people can a dining table seat, and who decides the size?
The room does. We size the table from the room and the chairs: the space each person needs, the clearance to walls and doors, and where the base sits so that knees and chair legs do not meet it. Send the room plan and the number of seats you want, and the drawing shows the table in the room.
Can the base take a heavy marble top?
Yes, when it is designed for it. A stone top is heavy and stiff, and it needs support close enough to its edges that it cannot crack under someone leaning on an overhang. The base is drawn once the top's size, thickness and stone are known, not before.
Will the table be delivered in one piece?
That depends on the base and the access to the room. Large bases are often made to bolt together, so they can pass through doors and lifts and be assembled in place with the joints hidden. We check the route from the street to the room before the base is designed.
Side tables and stools
Can side tables be made as a set that nests or matches?
Yes. Nesting tables are drawn together so each slides under the next with an even gap, and matching pairs for either side of a bed are made in one batch so the finish is the same on both. Sets in different heights but one design are just as common.
Are cast side tables heavy?
Solid cast pieces are heavy for their size, which is part of their character and makes them stable. Where a piece has to be moved often, it can be cast hollow or made from sheet and formed, which keeps the look at a fraction of the weight.
Can a stool be made comfortable to sit on for long?
A metal stool can have an upholstered or timber seat set into the frame, and the height is set from the counter or table it is used at. A bare metal seat is fine for perching; for a bar or dining stool used for an evening, we recommend a seat pad.
Reception and bar counters
Can a reception desk be clad in metal over a joinery carcass?
Yes, and that is the usual way. The joiner builds the desk's body and storage; we make and fix the metal skin, top edges and kick plate so that the joints line up and the corners are crisp. It works best when both are drawn together from the start.
How does a metal bar counter cope with spills and glasses?
The top is where the choice matters. Stainless steel shrugs off spills and cleaning; lacquered brass resists them but shows wear where glasses slide; bare brass and copper will spot and tone, which some bars want. The front of the counter can be any metal, because it is not wiped all night.
Can lighting be built into the counter?
Yes. Light under the top edge, behind a perforated or fluted front, or in the toe kick is common. The fittings, drivers and access are planned with the counter so that a light can be changed without taking the cladding off.
Shelving and display units
How much weight can metal shelves carry?
It depends on the span, the shelf section and how it is fixed. Books and stone objects need a stiffer shelf or a shorter span than glassware. Tell us what will sit on the shelves and we size them for it, so they stay straight for years rather than sagging in the middle.
Can shelving be fixed to the wall without visible brackets?
Yes. Floating shelves are carried on concealed rods or plates set into the wall, which needs a solid wall or a frame behind the board. Freestanding units avoid wall fixing altogether but should still be tied back at the top so they cannot tip.
Can a shop display unit be moved or reconfigured?
If it is designed to be. Units on levelling feet with adjustable shelves and bolted joints can be moved, re-arranged or taken to another store; welded units are stiffer and simpler but stay as they are. We ask at the start how often the display will change.
Chairs and chair frames
Do you upholster the chairs too?
We make the metal frame, and it is drawn for the upholstery it will carry: the seat and back fixings, the gaps the fabric needs and the points where the upholsterer will work. Many clients use their own upholsterer, and we work to their needs.
Will a metal chair be strong enough for a restaurant?
Yes, when it is designed for that use. Restaurant chairs are leaned back on, dragged and stacked, so the joints, tube sizes and feet are chosen for that rather than for a home dining room. Say where the chairs will be used, and how many, before they are drawn.
Can you make a sample chair before the full order?
Yes, and for any order of more than a few chairs we recommend it. A prototype is sat on, adjusted and approved; the production run is then made to it, so every chair matches the one that was agreed.
Bathroom metalwork
The pageShower enclosures
Which metal frame lasts best in a shower?
Brass and bronze last well in a wet room, and they change colour unless they are lacquered or plated. Stainless steel in a marine grade holds its look. Black frames are usually coated steel or brass, and the coating is what has to survive the water and the cleaning products, so it is chosen for that.
Can the enclosure be made to an existing tray and tiling?
Yes. It is measured on site after the tray and tiles are in, because walls and floors are rarely exactly square, and the frame is made to the real opening. Measuring before tiling means fitting later with sealant and packing.
Is the glass supplied with the frame?
The frame is designed around the glass, and we coordinate the toughened glass to suit it: clear, frosted, fluted or patterned. Glass for showers must be safety glass, made to size after the frame is measured.
Vanity units and basins
Will a brass basin stain or change colour?
Bare brass will darken and spot where water sits, which some people love. Lacquered or plated brass keeps its colour if it is cleaned with mild soap rather than abrasive cleaners. We show the finish on a sample, wet and dry, before the basin is made.
Can the vanity take a standard tap and waste?
Yes. The tap holes, waste position and overflow are drawn to the taps and fittings you have chosen, so tell us the models early. Wall-mounted taps need their position fixed before the wall is finished.
Can the vanity unit include storage?
Yes. A metal frame or pedestal can hold drawers, shelves or a cabinet, with the plumbing routed so it does not steal the space. Timber or stone can be combined with the metal where that suits the room better.
Mirror frames
The pageMirror frames
Can you frame a mirror we already have?
Usually, if the glass is in good condition. We measure the mirror and make the frame to fit around it. Old mirrors with damaged silvering at the edges are often better replaced with new glass cut to the frame.
How heavy is a large metal-framed mirror, and how is it hung?
Heavier than a timber one of the same size, so it is hung on a concealed cleat or brackets fixed into the wall, never on a wire. We need to know the wall it is going on, and for very large mirrors the fixing is planned before the wall is finished.
Can a sunburst or organic-shaped mirror be made to a custom size?
Yes. Shaped frames are drawn for each size so the rays or curves stay in proportion, and the mirror glass is cut to the shape. The drawing is approved before cutting, because a shaped mirror cannot be adjusted afterwards.
Sculpture and wall art
The pageWall art panels
How is wall art fixed to the wall?
On a concealed fixing behind the piece: a cleat, studs or a frame, chosen for the weight of the panel and the wall it goes on. Layered pieces are set off the wall so their shadows become part of the work. The fixing is planned with the design, not added at the end.
Can a panel be made for an outdoor wall?
Yes, with metals and finishes chosen for the weather. Bronze, brass and copper weather into a darker surface outdoors; stainless steel holds its look; mild steel needs a protective finish on every edge. Lacquered or polished finishes are better kept indoors.
Can we commission an original design, not one from your gallery?
Yes, most of our wall art is made for a particular wall. We start from your idea, a reference or a theme, draw it to scale on the wall, and agree the metal and finish on a sample before making it.
Free-standing sculptures
Can a sculpture stand outdoors in a garden?
Yes. Bronze and stainless steel are the classic outdoor sculpture metals; brass and copper also weather well and change colour over time. The base and its fixing to the ground are part of the design, so the sculpture stands safely in wind and does not invite climbing where it should not.
How is a large sculpture delivered and installed?
Large pieces are made in parts that join invisibly on site, or delivered whole with lifting points designed in. We check the route, the access and the floor or ground it will stand on, and install it ourselves.
Can we approve the sculpture before it is finished?
Yes. You approve a drawing or model first, then the form before the final finish is applied. The finish itself is agreed on a sample, because patina and polish are judged far better in the hand than in a photograph.
Ceiling installations
What does a ceiling installation hang from?
From the building's structure, not from the false ceiling. Each element hangs on a wire or rod fixed above, and the fixings are planned with the structural engineer or the building owner, especially in an atrium where the drop is high.
Can an installation be cleaned once it is up?
Yes, if access is planned. Pieces in an atrium are cleaned from a lift or tower, so we prefer finishes that stay presentable with little cleaning, like lacquered brass or patina. Very high installations are designed so individual elements can be lowered for care.
How do you work out the arrangement of a flock or cluster?
On a drawing and a 3D model of the space, viewed from where people stand and walk. The heights and spacing are set out on site from that model, and adjusted while hanging so the composition reads as intended from the main viewpoints.
Signage
The pageName plates and lettering
Can the house name be lit at night?
Yes. Letters can be halo-lit from behind, lit from inside through a cut face, or washed by a separate light. The power supply and where the driver sits need planning before the wall is finished.
Will brass lettering on an outside wall go dark?
Bare brass will tone to a darker, warm brown outdoors over months. If the bright gold look is wanted, the letters are lacquered or made in PVD-coloured stainless steel, which keeps its colour much longer outside.
Can you work from our logo file?
Yes. Send the vector artwork if you have it; a clear image is a start if you do not. We prepare a drawing showing the letter depth, the stroke widths that can be made in metal and the fixing, and you approve it before anything is cut.
Wall cladding
The pageMetal wall panels
How are the shadow joints between panels kept even?
By the frame behind them. Panels are hung on a sub-frame that is set out and levelled first, and each panel is made to a drawing that gives the joint its exact width. The evenness of the joints is decided long before the first panel goes on the wall.
Can metal panels go in a bedroom or corridor, not just a lobby?
Yes. Behind a bed, along a corridor or around a door, metal panels work as well as in a lobby. In smaller rooms a brushed or antique finish usually sits more calmly than mirror polish.
What happens behind the panels: switches, sockets and AC grilles?
They are drawn into the panel layout before cutting, so openings fall on joints or centres and look intended. Send the electrical and services drawings with the wall elevations, or we measure them on site.
Inlays and trims
When are inlays fitted: before or after the stone is laid?
Most strips are set as the stone or timber is laid, so they sit flush and the two materials close against them. Some can be routed in afterwards. The installer and we agree the sequence before work on the floor begins.
Will a brass inlay in a floor wear or tarnish?
Brass in a floor is polished by feet where people walk and tones down at the edges, which gives the line a natural look. If an even bright line is wanted, PVD-coloured stainless steel keeps its colour under foot traffic.
Can inlays follow curves?
Yes. Strips can be bent to a curve or cut from sheet to a curved line, and both are made from a drawing or a template taken on site, so the strip and the stone meet exactly.
Textured and 3D walls
Do textured and 3D walls collect dust?
A little, like any relief surface. Shallow patterns are dusted with a soft brush or cloth; deeper ones are easier to keep if they are placed out of reach of hands and away from kitchens. We suggest the depth with the room's use in mind.
Can a 3D wall be backlit?
Yes. Perforated, cut or open patterns can be lit from behind, and solid tiles can be washed with light from above or below to bring out their relief. The light source and access are planned with the wall.
Is the pattern fixed, or can it be designed for our wall?
It can be designed for your wall. Hexagons, geometric tiles, studs and hand-beaten textures are all made to your dimensions, and the layout is drawn so the pattern ends neatly at edges, corners and openings.
Lift cladding
The pageLift surrounds and doors
Can the existing lift doors be clad, or must they be replaced?
Lift doors can usually be clad with a thin metal skin, but the weight added and the way it is fixed must be approved by the lift maintenance company. We coordinate with them before anything is made, so the lift's safety and warranty are not affected.
Which finish stays smart in a busy lift lobby?
A brushed or textured finish, in stainless steel or PVD-coloured stainless steel, which hide fingerprints and light scuffs. Polished brass and bronze look rich but need regular care in a lobby where hands and luggage touch them all day.
Can the lift surround include the floor indicators and call buttons?
Yes. The openings for the indicator, call buttons and any signage are drawn into the cladding, made to the lift supplier's fittings, so they sit flush and aligned.
Screens and partitions
The pageLaser-cut jaali screens
Can a jaali screen be used as a room divider?
Yes. It can stand freely on a base, fix between floor and ceiling, or slide on a track. A freestanding screen needs a weighted or fixed base so it cannot tip; a fixed one is the steadiest.
Can the pattern be our own design?
Yes. A logo, a motif or a traditional jaali can be drawn for cutting. We check that the pattern holds together in the chosen metal and thickness, and show it at full size before the production run.
Can a jaali screen be used outdoors?
Yes, in a metal and finish chosen for the weather. Many exterior jaalis are in coated mild steel, aluminium or weathering metals like brass and copper. The frame and fixings are made to cope with wind and rain.
Glazed metal partitions
How slim can the metal frame of a partition be?
Slim, because metal is strong, but the size of the glass, the height and any doors decide it. We draw the partition with sections chosen for its size, so it is as fine as it can be while staying rigid and safe.
Does a glazed partition block sound?
Partly. Single glass in a slim frame lets some sound through; laminated or double glazing with seals at the edges does much better. If privacy of conversation matters, as in an office or a meeting room, tell us at the start.
Can the partition include a sliding or swing door?
Yes. Sliding, swing and pivot doors can all be built into the partition in the same frame and finish, with hardware chosen for how often it will be used.
Facades
The pageFacade screens and cladding
How is a facade screen fixed to the building?
On brackets and a sub-frame fixed to the structure, designed to carry the screen's weight and the wind on it, with movement allowed for heat. We need the building's structural details, and fixings into the structure are agreed with the architect or engineer.
Will a copper or brass facade change colour?
Yes, outdoors these metals age: brass and copper darken to brown, and copper eventually greens in time. That ageing is usually the reason they are chosen. If a fixed colour is wanted, coated or PVD-coloured finishes keep their look far longer.
Can a perforated screen give privacy but still let in light?
Yes, that is often its whole purpose. The size and density of the perforation decide how much light and view pass through, and a full-size sample held in place shows the effect before production.
Doors
The pageMain entrance doors
Is a metal entrance door secure?
A metal-clad door is built on a strong core and frame, and its security comes from that core, the locks and the hinges or pivot. We fit the locking hardware you choose and make the door to suit it.
Will a patina door weather outdoors?
A patina continues to develop where rain and sun reach it, which many entrance doors are chosen for. Under a porch it changes slowly; fully exposed it changes faster. If a fixed look is wanted, the patina can be sealed, and that seal is renewed from time to time.
Can the handle be designed with the door?
Yes, and we recommend it. A sculpted handle made for the door, in the same metal and finish, makes the entrance read as one piece. It is drawn with the door and sized for the hand and the height it will be used at.
Glazed metal doors
Can a glazed metal door be used between inside and outside?
Yes, if it is designed for it, with seals, a threshold and glass suited to the weather. Interior glazed doors are simpler and slimmer. Tell us where the door goes so the frame and glass are chosen correctly.
Can arched doors be made to an existing opening?
Yes. The opening is measured on site, and for an arch a template is taken, because existing arches are rarely perfectly regular. The door is then made to the real opening.
Do folding metal doors run smoothly?
They do when the hardware is chosen for the door's weight and size, and the floor and head are level. We specify the track and hinges with the door and set them carefully on site.
Gates
The pageSliding and swing gates
Can a gate be made ready for automation later?
Yes. Even if the motor comes later, the gate can be made with the stiffness, the mounting points and the cable route a motor needs. That is much easier than adapting a finished gate.
How do you stop a large metal gate from sagging?
By the design of the frame and the hinges or track. A swing gate needs a rigid frame and hinges sized for its weight; a sliding gate runs on a track or a cantilever. Sagging comes from a frame too light for its size, so the frame is designed first.
Which finish lasts outdoors on a gate?
On mild steel, a proper protective coating on every surface and edge. Brass and copper cladding weather naturally and darken, which suits some homes. We recommend the finish with the gate's exposure in mind and explain the care it needs.
Boundary screens
Can boundary screens give full privacy?
Yes, with a solid or close pattern. A more open pattern gives partial privacy with more light and air. A sample panel held at the boundary shows how much the screen hides from the street.
Will the screen stand up to strong wind?
Screens act like sails in the wind, so their posts and fixings are designed for it. Open patterns let wind through and carry less load; solid panels need stronger posts. We size the structure for the site.
Can screens be added on top of an existing wall?
Often, if the wall is sound and the fixings can be made into it. We inspect the wall and design the fixing to suit it; a weak wall may need posts of their own.
Ceilings
The pageBaffle and slat ceilings
Can lights and AC vents fit into a baffle ceiling?
Yes. Baffle and slat ceilings are designed with the lighting, sprinklers, speakers and air vents in mind, so the fittings sit between or within the baffles in a regular rhythm. Send the services drawings early and the layout is coordinated with them.
Does a baffle ceiling help with sound?
It can. Baffles break up sound reflection, and with acoustic backing above or perforated baffles, they absorb noise in busy restaurants and offices. Say if acoustics matter and we include it in the design.
Can the baffles be different depths or follow a wave?
Yes. Varying depths, waves and curves are all possible. Each baffle is made to a drawing with its own profile, and the ceiling is set out on site from the same drawing.
Ceiling panels and trims
Can a metal ceiling panel or dome be lit from inside?
Yes. Coves, domes and coffers are often lit indirectly, with the light hidden in the profile. The fittings and drivers are planned with access so that maintenance does not mean taking the ceiling apart.
Are metal ceiling trims fitted before or after the false ceiling?
Trims are usually fitted with the ceiling, so the board meets them cleanly. Where they frame lights or edges, we coordinate with the ceiling installer on the order of work.
Is a metal ceiling heavy?
Less than many people think: ceiling panels are made in lighter sheet and hung from a suspension designed for them. Heavier elements, like domes or deep coffers, are hung from the structure above.
Fireplaces
The pageFireplace surrounds
Can a metal surround be fitted to an existing fireplace?
Usually yes. We measure the existing opening and the wall, and make the surround to fit, with the fixings and the gap to the heat planned. The fire's own safety requirements always come first.
Will the metal get hot?
Parts close to the fire will warm up. That is why the parts the fire touches are made in heavy steel, and decorative brass or bronze is kept beside the heat, not in it. We design the surround with the type of fire in mind: wood, gas or electric.
Can you make a fire tray or fender to match?
Yes. Fire trays, fenders, grates and tool sets can be made in the same metal and finish so the fireplace reads as one design.
Railings and staircases
The pageBalustrades and handrails
Do balustrades meet safety heights and gaps?
They are designed to meet the safety rules for height, the size of gaps and the loads people place on them, as set by your architect or the building rules for your project. Laser-cut and scroll patterns are drawn so that no gap is wide enough for a child to pass through.
Can a balustrade be made for an outdoor terrace or pool?
Yes, in a metal and finish chosen for sun and water: stainless steel, coated mild steel, or brass and bronze where weathering is wanted. Near pools, the chosen metal must resist chlorine as well as rain.
Can the handrail be wrapped in leather or timber?
Yes. A metal core rail can be wrapped in leather or capped with timber for a warmer touch, and the brackets and ends are made in the balustrade's metal so it all reads as one.
Feature staircases
Can a feature staircase be made for an existing building?
Often yes, but it depends on the structure the stair fixes to and how it gets in. We survey the space and the access, and large stairs are made in sections that are joined on site.
Who does the structural design?
We prepare the fabrication drawings, and the structure is checked by the structural engineer appointed for the project, for the loads the stair will carry. A spiral or floating stair especially needs that check before fabrication.
What do the treads finish in?
Metal treads can be finished in texture for grip; many feature stairs use timber or stone treads on a metal structure. The choice depends on the look, the sound and how the stair is used.
Handles, planters and details
The pageHandles and hardware
Can handles be made to match our door or furniture?
Yes. Handles, pulls and hardware are made in the metal and finish of the door or furniture, and sized for it. A long pull on a tall door, or a small knob on a cabinet, is drawn for its place and its hand.
Will the handle work with standard locks and fittings?
Yes. We make the handle and its fixing to fit the lock or latch you choose, so tell us the lock model early. For pulls on glass doors, the glass holes are drilled to the handle's drawing.
How does a patina or smoky handle wear?
Where the hand holds it, the finish wears to a brighter, polished metal, while the rest keeps its darker tone. That is what makes a well-used bronze handle look loved. A lacquered finish slows this down.
Planters and water features
Will a metal planter heat up and harm the plant?
In full sun, metal heats up, so planters are made with a liner or an insulated inner pot, and drainage, so roots stay cool and water does not sit. We design planters for the place they stand.
How is a water feature kept running and clean?
The pump, water supply and electrical point are planned with the feature, with access for cleaning and service. Metals and finishes are chosen to cope with constant water; we explain the care they need.
Can planters be made in sizes to fit our terrace?
Yes. Planters are made to measure in length, width and height, with weight checked for the terrace or roof they stand on. Large planters full of soil and water are very heavy, so we check the load first.
