Brass

The metal most often asked for by name. Brass carries a warmth that no coating can imitate, and it accepts more hand-work than anything else we use.

Warm, generous, and alive to the touch.

Brass is the material at the centre of most of what we build. It cuts, folds, spins, casts and takes a weld well, and — more importantly — it responds to the hand. A brass sheet can be beaten, chased, embossed and chemically aged into a surface that no machine could specify.

It is also the most honest metal in the workshop. Brass changes. A raw surface will tone and darken with handling and time, which some designers want and some do not.

Where a specification calls for the look of brass held permanently at one moment, we lacquer or PVD-coat it. Where the intention is for the metal to live, we say so clearly and finish it accordingly.

Questions about brass

What is the difference between brass and bronze?

Both are copper alloys. Brass is copper with zinc — yellower, brighter, easier to work and to polish. Bronze is copper with tin — redder, deeper, harder, and it weathers into a darker, more even patina. Brass is the choice for warmth and shine; bronze for gravity and age. Under a lacquer the two are close; left bare they diverge within a year.

Will brass stay bright?

Only under a lacquer or with regular polishing. Bare brass tones down — a soft, darker surface that deepens where it is handled — and that is what most people who choose bare brass are choosing. Decide at the outset which brass you want, because the two are looked after differently.
