Copper forms more easily than anything else we work with. It can be beaten into deep three-dimensional relief, spun, raised and chased into shapes that would tear in a harder metal. Our most sculptural hand-work is usually copper.
It is also the metal that most rewards patination. Green, blue, red, brown and near-black patinas are all achievable, and because they are chemical rather than applied colour, they sit in the surface rather than on it.
Copper will continue to develop unless it is sealed. On a facade that is often the point. On an interior surface that must not change, it needs a coating — and that is a decision to make before, not after.
