Aluminium

The metal that solves problems of weight and span. Where a ceiling has to hang or a facade panel has to stay flat over a large area, aluminium is usually the right answer.

Aluminium is roughly a third the weight of steel, which changes what is possible overhead. Long baffle runs, large open-cell grids and wide facade panels are all easier — and safer — in aluminium.

It is corrosion-resistant without a coating and takes powder coating and anodising extremely well, which makes it the obvious choice where a specific colour has to be held precisely across a large quantity.

Welding aluminium is a different discipline from welding steel or brass, and it is one we have equipped for specifically: our TIG setup includes machines dedicated to aluminium work.

When is aluminium the right choice?

When weight matters: a large ceiling, a facade screen, a piece that has to be lifted into place or hung from something that cannot carry steel. It takes a coating or an anodised finish well and holds its colour outdoors. It does not weather the way copper alloys do, so a warm, ageing metal look is not what it is for.

Anodised or coated aluminium?

Anodising grows the finish in the metal itself, so it cannot chip or peel, and it gives clear, bronze, black and a narrow range of tones. Coating sits on the surface and gives any colour, including the warm-metal tones, at the cost of being a layer that can be scratched through. Outdoors and where hands touch, anodising lasts; where a specific colour is the brief, coating delivers it.
