Worth knowing before you choose it
A scratch across the grain is visible from a distance. Repairs are re-grained over a whole panel rather than a spot, so panel sizes are decided with replacement in mind. Brass hairline left unlacquered will tone down over time — which is usually the point, but should be chosen knowingly.
Looking after it
Wipe along the grain, never across it, with a mild detergent and a soft cloth. Cleaning across the grain is what turns a hairline finish into a scratched one.
A finish is always approved on a physical sample of the metal you are using, under the light it will live in. Pictures on a screen only show the character of it.
