| How it looks | A non-directional swirled grain that scatters light. | Fully reflective. | A fine unidirectional grain. | Soft clouds of dark tone drifting across a warm ground. |
| Metals | Stainless steel, brass | Stainless steel, brass, copper, bronze | Stainless steel, brass, aluminium | Brass, copper, bronze |
| Where it suits | Indoors and outdoors | Indoors | Indoors and outdoors | Indoors |
| Worth knowing | Hard to carry cleanly around a tight curve, so it suits flat and gently formed panels. | Shows every fingerprint and every scratch, so it belongs where it will be looked at and not handled. | A scratch across the grain is visible from a distance. | Suits panels, cladding and furniture seen as a whole. |
| Looking after it | Wipe in any direction — there is no grain to respect, which is why it hides scuffs better than any other polished surface. | A soft dry cloth for dust and a damp one for marks — never anything abrasive, which scratches a mirror surface permanently. | Wipe along the grain, never across it, with a mild detergent and a soft cloth. | Lacquered, it is simply wiped. |
