How it looks	Surfaces worked or grown to a tactile grain — crystalline, mottled, stony, or crazed like old glaze — that catches side light and changes as the light moves.	Softer and more open than hairline, with a matt reflection that sits comfortably beside stone and timber.	A fine unidirectional grain.	Soft clouds of dark tone drifting across a warm ground.

Worth knowing	Deep textures collect dirt and grease, so they belong away from kitchens, counters and the outdoors.	Small repairs blend better than on hairline but a damaged area is still re-brushed across the whole face.	A scratch across the grain is visible from a distance.	Suits panels, cladding and furniture seen as a whole.
Looking after it	Dust with a soft brush and wipe; a deep grain holds what a flat surface would shed.	Along the grain, mild detergent, soft cloth.	Wipe along the grain, never across it, with a mild detergent and a soft cloth.	Lacquered, it is simply wiped.
