How it looks	Deep three-dimensional panels and medallions cast from a pattern, then hand-finished.	Design bitten into the surface, producing fine detail and artwork that cannot be achieved mechanically.	A fine unidirectional grain.	Surfaces worked or grown to a tactile grain — crystalline, mottled, stony, or crazed like old glaze — that catches side light and changes as the light moves.

Worth knowing	A pattern has to be made before anything is cast, so a one-off medallion carries the cost of its tooling.	Shallow by nature, so it wears where hands and feet pass — a wall or a panel, not a counter or a step.	A scratch across the grain is visible from a distance.	Deep textures collect dirt and grease, so they belong away from kitchens, counters and the outdoors.
Looking after it	A soft brush for the relief, a damp cloth for the face.	Mild detergent and a soft cloth.	Wipe along the grain, never across it, with a mild detergent and a soft cloth.	Dust with a soft brush and wipe; a deep grain holds what a flat surface would shed.
