How it looks	Softer and more open than hairline, with a matt reflection that sits comfortably beside stone and timber.	Design bitten into the surface, producing fine detail and artwork that cannot be achieved mechanically.	One tone fading into another across a panel — brass into bronze, gold into gun metal, warm into dark — graded by hand so that the transition has no step.	A fine unidirectional grain.

Worth knowing	Small repairs blend better than on hairline but a damaged area is still re-brushed across the whole face.	Shallow by nature, so it wears where hands and feet pass — a wall or a panel, not a counter or a step.	A gradient that runs across several panels is set out as one drawing and graded as one batch, so that it continues across the joints.	A scratch across the grain is visible from a distance.
